Creative Fridays! hosted by: Hazriq Idrus ![]() An important factor to succeed at work (or in life) is to be visible. One of the ways to be visible at the workplace is to be able to communicate and connect with others in a way that they like to listen and be with you. A Columbia University study by Melinda Tamkins shows that success in the workplace is determined by popularity, not by who or what you know. According to consultant Pam Holloway of About People, Tamkins’ study found that the workers who were recommended for pay increase or fast track promotion were seen as motivated, trustworthy and hardworking. These are traits of ‘likeability’. In his book, The Likeability Factor, author Tim Sanders noted these four elements to be likeable: 1. Friendliness: your ability to communicate liking and openness to others 2. Relevance: your capacity to connect with others' interests, wants, and needs 3. Empathy: your ability to recognize, acknowledge, and experience other people's feelings 4. Realness: the integrity that stands behind your likeability and guarantees its authenticity Which means, if you communicate and connect regularly with your colleagues, while exuding these four “Likeability” factors, your visibility at work increases. When your visibility is elevated, your chances of getting promotion or a pay raise are much higher. In this article, let’s take a look at 3 simple ways to increase “Likeability” so as to elevate your visibility at work: 1) Offer assistance to your colleagues: Instead of just focusing on your work, take an interest in that of your colleagues’. If you know of anyone who needs help in meeting deadlines, approach them. It could also a service to the department especially if helping out could lead to better overall work function. 2) Be interested in your colleagues’ ‘beyond-work’ lives: Take a step ahead than just a hi and bye at the office. By taking interest in their life goals, families and hobbies, shows that you value them as people, not just merely as colleagues at work. 3) Pray for your colleagues’ and be happy for their successes How many a times did we pray for other people’s success, besides our own? Hone the ability to feel happy for others by having an abundance mindset: there is enough for everyone to enjoy life and benefit from. Recently I came across a question in my LinkedIn group, asking a question "I’m organising a conference for 54 delegates. How can I creatively group the delegates into 9 different groups, without using the usual “lucky draw” style?” If you are facing similar situation, here would my suggestion to run the process: Pre-Event Preparation: - Prepare 3 colour-coded zones: Red, Yellow, Green - Each zone has 3 tables. The tables are colour-coded according to the zones; 3 red tables in Red Zone, 3 yellow tables in Yellow Zone, 3 green table in Green Zone. You can consider using coloured table cloth to differentiate them - At each table, place 6 chairs, but colour code them differently; 2 "red" chairs, 2 "yellow" chairs, 2 "green" chairs. This “chair colour-coding” could be done by placing coloured different coloured cards (i.e size of name cards) on the chairs When the doors are open for the delegates to enter the conference room, let them sit anywhere. Time to group the delegates into the different groups: - Once the conference begin and when it is time to group the delegates up, invite the delegates to stand up while holding that colour-coded cards in their hands, - Then invite them to move to the tables that match with their colour-coded cards. Ie. Red colour-coded cards will move to tables in the Red Zone. Conclusion: In this manner, the delegates are grouped in 9 groups, each group having 6 new members to work with. This can also serve as a high-energy good ice-breaker for the conference. One of the reasons people started to get nervous when asked to present to an audience, is because of the Question & Answer segment. Most people are afraid of not being able to answer correctly; and that they are fear of being judged by the answer they give.
Here, let me share my "8-Simple Steps on How to Handle Questions after a Presentation". These steps can be used whether when you are making a presentation or attending job interviews. Step 1: Positively 'Position' Yourself If you are thinking that the people who are going to ask you are going to drill you down, the negative mindset has already taking over you. Instead, have a paradigm shift. Position yourself in a way that you are going to have a conversation, instead of answering a question. (You do not get nervous when you converse with your friends, do you? ) In this way, you'll be at ease right from the beginning. Step 2: Listen Attentively The cornerstone of communication is Listening. If we listen wrongly, we will respond differently. That is how information gets out of point; or miscommunication happens.. Step 3: Thank the Person It is basic courtesy to thank the person for the question. For one to take the trouble to ask you a question, it shows that the person is interested in your topic. Step 4: Clarify by Paraphrasing After the questioner has asked you the question, immediately, AND ALWAYS, clarify. By clarifying, use your words and paraphrase the question. I cannot stress this out more. There are a few reasons for doing so: 1) Paraphrasing shows that you understand the question. So you will not go out of point addressing it. 2) Some of the audience might not be able to hear the question earlier, probably due to soft voice of the questioner or faulty mic. So paraphrasing the question will be very helpful. 3) The time you take to paraphrase is also useful for you to "buy" time, as you start to search for the most suitable answer. Step 5: Take a moment to structure your answer It is okay to be quiet for a moment as you gather your answers and begin to structure them. One of the better ways is to structure your answers are in this format; Firstly,..... Secondly....Thirdly...... If you need to jot down the points, do so to help you remember. In this manner, the questioner and the audience can digest your answer easily later. Step 6: Share your answer After you have gathered and structured your information, present your answer. Step 7: Ask if the question has been addressed After sharing your answer, ask the questioner if question has been addressed. If you have hit it right, the questioner will be happy with your answer. Step 8: Thank again Close the loop by thanking the questioner again. Any questions? Towards your continued success.
