ANDERSON SECONDARY SCHOOL'S
PRESENTATIONS/ DEBATE TRAINING & COACHING 2017
Challenge
Anderson Secondary School noticed that while the students did very well during preliminary rounds of the nationals debate competition in 2016 (Bahas 4PM), the students faltered right at the next round of Quarter Finals. The school diagnosed that this was due to the lack of confidence and delivery skills of the student debaters. The school urged the debating students to be more creative and confident for the 2017 season.
Solution
The Speaking Factory designed and delivered a 2-parter training programme for Anderson Secondary. The first part was an 'introductory to debate' workshop for the cohort, followed by a series small group coaching sessions for the debaters during the competition from July to September. The workshop focused on the basics of debating; while the coaching sessions focused on the students' mindset and delivery styles based on the student's individual's strengths. Students were given tools which they were to apply during the preparation and the competition itself.
Results
Anderson Secondary School emerged Champions in 2017. The coaching sessions' evaluations were excellent and the students found that the tools and skills learnt were valuable.
